Kahalu'u Beach Park

Located 3 miles south of HLSI Headquarters. Kahalu'u Beach Park is a full amenties Family Beach offering both white and black sand. Kahalu'u Beach Park is the largest beach park in the heart of Kailua-Kona town.

Separated by 2 bays, and sheltered by the remnants of an ancient rock wall known as Paokamenehune Seawall,  is the ideal beach park for beach goers, snorkelers, off shore divers, body boards and surfers.

Picnic areas, boardwalk, outside showers, bathrooms, lifeguards, food vendors and rental vendors are all available at this beautiful beach park.

Snorkeling is exceptional here due to the natural underground fresh water streams which feed into the bay. Also the structure of the bay, due in part to the southern Paokamenehune Seawall helps to create a natural curent, which flows in and out of the bay in a circular motion, cycling the waters throughout the Hawaiian tides creating crystal clean waters.

Kahalu'u is a natural fish preserve protected by the county of Hawaii. Green Sea turtles also injoy the bay and can be seen in the waters or on the sand. Green Sea turtles are protected by law, touching is prohibited.

The crystal clear waters are home to hundreds if not thousands of fish and sea creatures, including coral.

The coral shelf's of Kahalu'u provide food and shelter to the sea life and also help to create the surf break found to the north of the smaller bay.

Adjacent to the south end of the bay sits Saint Peter's Church- known more so as "The little blue church" . Saint Peter's Churchs is the most photographed church in the state of Hawaii. Parking for the church is along side the roag and guard rail. There are steps off the street side which bring you down to Saint Peters Church and Ku'emanu Heiau. Along side the church is small inlet or cove used to enter and exit the waters.

→Ku'emanu Heiau is the only heiau, meaning temple or religious site, dedicated to surfing known in the Hawaiian Islands.

The platform stone based temple dedicated to the sport of surfing was the site where the ancient Hawaiians would come to pray for good surf and good weather. The terrece of the platform privided the Hawaiian Chiefs of old and their families a gathering area to spectate and enjoy the surf.       ©2008-TKS
